Location Overview

Located 290 miles southwest of Anchorage, AK, the Alagnak Wild River is a pristine landscape that offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the untouched wilderness and abundant wildlife of southwest Alaska.

The headwaters of the Alagnak Wild River are located near the rugged Aleutian Range of nearby Katmai National Park & Preserve. The river travels west towards Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea.

Fishing

The Alagnak Wild River is popular among anglers around the world as one of the best fishing destinations in all of southwest Alaska. The Alagnak provides anglers with an ample sport fish including: rainbow trout, char, grayling, and abundant salmon. The river is one of the most popular fly-in fishing locations in all of southwest Alaska.

Boating

The Alagnak offers plenty of serenity and wildlife viewing opportunities for those visitors navigating the river. The river has Class III rapids that provide exciting trips for rafters. Rafting trips typically begin at Nonvianuk Lake or Kukaklek Lake, both of which are easily accessible via float plane. There are many river sections suitable for take-out along the lower 30 miles of river.

Climate

Weather in the Bristol Bay is frequented with rain and wind with cool, cloudy, and misty days being the norm. Day temperatures in the summer range between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit with night temperatures dipping to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The surface of the Alagnak freezes in the winter, but water continues to flow. A thin layer of frozen overflow creates ice that may be dangerous for those who attempt winter river travel. Regardless of the season, weather can sometimes prevent airplanes from flying in, and visitors should be prepared for at least one extra day on the river. Be sure to layer your clothing to help regulate your body temperature.
