Location Overview

Adams National Historical Park tells the story of four generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927).

The park features the Old House, built in 1731 and home to four generations of the Adams family from 1788 to 1927. It was home to Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams; First Ladies Abigail and Louisa Catherine Adams; Civil War Minister to Great Britain Charles Francis Adams; and literary historians Henry and Brooks Adams.

An impressive collection of original artifacts can be found inside the Old House. The Old House grounds also includes a historic orchard and an 18th-century style formal garden which contains thousands of annual and perennial flowers.

Visitors to the park can also view the birthplaces of John Adams, the 2nd U.S. President, and John Quincy Adams, the 6th U.S. President. The John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces are the oldest presidential birthplaces in the United States.

The park is also home to the Stone Library which contains more than 14,000 historic volumes and is considered to be the first presidential library.

The area was designated Adams Mansion National Historic Site on December 9, 1946 and renamed to Adams National Historic Site on November 26, 1952. On December 19, 1960, the birthplaces of both presidents were designated as National Historic Landmarks.

Located in Quincy, Massachusetts, the Park's season runs from April 19 to November 10. The park is open seven days a week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. From November 11 through April 18 the historic homes are closed.  The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

To see the historic homes you must be on a guided tour.  Tours last approximately two hours and depart regularly from the Visitor Center located at 1250 Hancock Street. The park provides a trolleybus between sites. Please be aware that the last tour leaves at 3:15 pm daily.
