Location Overview
The George S. Mickelson is a 110 mile trail running through the heart of the Black Hills. The trail begins in Deadwood and ends at Edgemont. The trails rides the Black Hills High Line which was abandoned by the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1983. 15 years later the entire trail was completed and dedicated in September 1998.
Over 100 railroad trestles are still in place offering spectacular views of deep canyons and streams. The trails is crushed limestone. The grades are gentle and gradual but some portions of the trail are very strenuous. The 19 mile stretch outside of Deadwood to Dumont rises in elevation from 4,537 to 6,060 feet. Much of the trail goes through National Forest land.
Fees are $2 a day or $10 for an annual pass.
