Location Overview

Not far from Cuba, situated in the Caribbean Sea about midway between Florida and South America, sits the island nation of Jamaica. Known for its magnificent beaches, unique diving opportunities, excellent cuisine, and energetic reggae culture, Jamaica has long been a favorite destination of those seeking a pleasant stay at a nice resort at affordable prices.

Jamaica seems to attract mostly couples, with a number of all-inclusive resorts dubbed “couples only,” many of whom arrive to celebrate their honeymoon. However, families will certainly enjoy the island as well, especially the sunny beaches of Negril and Montego Bay and the clear blue waters of the Caribbean.

Over the years, Jamaica has earned the unfortunate reputation as a place full of racial tension and political strife, but guests who contain their stay to their chosen resort rarely suffer a problem while visiting. Any excursions outside the resort complex should be considered carefully and accomplished only with the help of an experienced local guide.

The Beaches

For many, a trip to Jamaica takes them to the coastal town of Montego Bay, situated in the northwestern part of the island. Mo Bay, as it is often called, is home to some of the nation’s best beaches. Consider a visit to 5-mile-long Doctor’s Cave, one of the first tourist beaches on the island and still among the most popular, especially with families. Others prefer Cornwall Beach, a bit more crowded but equally as lovely.

In Negril, on the westernmost tip, you’ll find Seven Mile Beach, with its golden sand and clean, clear water. Families are welcome here but you will encounter some “nudist” areas, though they are somewhat secluded.

On the other side of the island, surfers flock to Boston Bay Beach at Port Antonio. Those who don’t surf can watch while enjoying the pure white sand and the jerk pork stands that surround the beach.

For a more secluded experience, head to the less-visited south coast of the island. Here you’ll find Black River Bay and Treasure Beach. Swimming can be a little dangerous in the south but the scenery is awesome and you’ll enjoy plenty of alone time.

Back to Nature

Jamaica is more than just beaches, though that’s sometimes all that visitors take the time to see. However, with both mountains and rivers gracing Jamaica’s terrain, you can do a whole lot more than sun and swim.

Rafters can travel down the Rio Grande, hikers may want to explore the Blue Mountains – thick with lush vegetation and famous for the coffee beans that grow there - and amateur spelunkers can visit the depths of the Green Grotto Caves. In addition, the jungle-like Black River region provides guests with an up-close look at crocodiles and other fauna and flora of the swamp.

Music

It’s impossible to go to Jamaica and ignore the music. While you’ll find all types of music on the island, reggae is truly the heart and soul of Jamaica and you’ll hear it just about everywhere. With its roots in traditional African music, reggae songs often tell a story (some political, some suggestive, others fairly innocuous), but for many, it’s the pulsating beat not the lyrics that makes reggae fun and exciting. Be sure to take some time to listen to the many reggae artists that perform in restaurants, bars, and on the street corners of Jamaica.
